Laura Fredricks

Rich and Laura Fredricks’ daughter, Emily Claire Fredricks, was killed In Philadelphia on November 28, 2017, by the driver of a private sanitation truck. Emily was cycling to work as a French pastry chef, and was killed at the corner of Spruce and 11th Streets, as the driver made a right hook into her. He was not held accountable for killing Emily. Emily was the sunshine of Laura and Rich’s lives, as well as their two sons, Michael and Jack. She was 24 years old when she was killed and had her whole life ahead of her. Their family will never be the same. Laura and Rich are involved in the advocacy for safe streets because they do not want this tragedy and trauma to affect any other family.

They are co-founders of Families for Safe Streets Greater Philadelphia and Families for Safe Streets Massachusetts, where they now live. Laura is a Board member of PA Safe Roads PAC.

“Every day I think I’m going to wake from this nightmare, and she is going to walk through the door.”

Family is the cornerstone of our lives especially after 32 wonderful years of marriage and raising two incredible sons.   When we are not spending quality time with the people we love, we are living at the beach soaking up the sun, relaxing by the sea and fishing:  creating unforgettable moments with loved ones.  Emily was an amazing young lady whose life was gone too soon.  She had a contagious laugh, smile and was loved by all.  We honor her memory by looking for change with supporting the Emily Fredricks Foundation.

Jill Fredricks Brown

Emily’s Aunt, Rich’s baby sister and goddaughter.

I’ve had the pleasure of having Rich and Laura for my brother and sister, and watching their three amazing children grow up to be lovely, caring, and kind adults, like their mom and dad. I’m very proud to be a part of the EFF, working to end traffic violence in Philadelphia and surrounding areas, advocating for other victims and their families, and providing them with a supportive community to lean on. Our family was left with an empty space when Emily was killed. We know that she would want us to fight to protect other victims, and more importantly support legislation to prevent future tragedies. I currently live and work in South Jersey as a School Psychologist with my two children. Having lived in Philly for 12 years prior to settling in Marlton NJ, I experienced cycling and traffic issues firsthand. My children still live part-time in Philly with their father, and continue to be impacted by these issues.

My sister Emily was taken from us far too soon, I think about what she would have been doing and the wonderful woman she would have become everyday. She was always laughing and lifting the spirits of everyone around her. And even though she is no longer here to share in the new moments, I see her everywhere I go. In the eyes of my family, in the compassion of my friends, or in the dragonflies that fly overhead during any outdoor adventures. I am so grateful for the people around me. Especially my wife, Emby, who constantly reminds me that it is okay to miss her, it’s okay to still be hurting. She lets me know everyday that I am not alone. I will always have an empty space in my heart, but I hope that my sister is proud of the person I have become.
